Recirculation factor as a key parameter in continuous-flow biomass selection for polyhydroxyalkanoates production

چکیده

The effectiveness of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production with mixed microbial cultures (MMC) largely depends on the selection PHA-storing microorganisms, conventionally performed in sequencing batch reactors (SBR). These, although easily allow establishment required feast and famine (FF) regime, can represent a factor cost increase when process is scaled up. Here, novel continuous-flow for MMC under FF conditions has been developed by using two sequentially operated reactors. reactor, having tubular configuration, was continuously fed synthetic mixture acetic propionic acids (at an organic loading rate 2.12 gCOD/L d) effluent this reactor part sent to CSTR reactor. recirculation (RC), that ratio between flow feeding main parameter investigated. Four different runs were RC varying from 1 8 its value caused decrease biomass residence time each intracellular PHA content almost linearly increased up 4 (with 34 ± 2%, wt/wt) dropped at condition that, however, showed maximum (58 5%, during accumulation tests. Indeed, relative abundance sequences affiliated putative bacteria 90.5 % dominated members Alphaproteobacteria class mostly represented genus Meganema (74%).

Polyhydroxyalkanoates production from waste biomass

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) is a group of biopolymers that are extensively researched for such purpose due to the biocompatibility with mammal tissue and similar properties with conventional plastic. However, commercialization of PHA is impended by its high total production cost, which half of it are from the cost of pure carbon source feedstock. Thus, cheap and sustainable feedstocks are pref...

Inflammation, a Key Factor in Cancer Ambush

Inflammatory condition is the consequence of defensive mechanism of immune system against viral and bacterial infection, tissue injury, UV radiation, stress and etc. Persistently acute inflammation leads to chronic phase which is characterized by production of pro-inflammatory mediators from T cells. These molecules (e.g. IL-6, TNF-&alpha, IL-1&beta and IL-17) are mostly pleiotropic cytokines i...

Trichinella britovi as a risk factor for alternative pig production systems in Greece and Europe

Trichinellosis is an important zoonosis and the most common source of human infection is meat from pigs and wild boars. The European Union (EU) supports alternative pig production systems (organic and free-ranging) as sustainable farming systems. However, these systems that allow outdoor access for farm animals, may create new or reintroduce old risks to public health. During the last years, al...

STAT3 as a Key Factor in Tumor Microenvironment and Cancer Stem Cell

Background Recent studies revealed that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a decisive role in the regulation of tumor progression by manipulating tumor oncogenesis, angiogenesis and immune functions within tumor microenvironments. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), which is a point of convergence for numerous oncogenic signalling pathways, is constitutively activ...
